Following a rigorous application and assessment process, we are pleased to announce that Down Ampney Primary School is an Eco Schools’ Green Flag with Distinction 2023-2024 award holder.
Through our continued ‘green work’ within school and the community, we first gained our Green Flag award in 2020-21 and this is our 4th consecutive Green Flag and our second with the top mark of Distinction.
The Eco Schools topics that we work on help our young people engage with environmental issues that are important to them and our local community. They also cover a huge range of sustainability issues including the climate crisis, plastic pollution and biodiversity loss.
To achieve this incredible award, we had to be working on 3 different areas within the Eco School Framework: Biodiversity, Healthy Living and School Grounds. The children, staff and wider school community worked hard across the year to raise awareness of environmental issues.
Our Eco Schools Padlet showcases the work undertaken by adults and children across the year, including the development of our school pond with plants and new habitats, the planting of a “dead hedge” to encourage insect life, planting new saplings in the forest area, gaining the Gloucestershire Healthy Schools award through initiatives such as car sharing and whole school CPR training and weaving our sustainability work through the taught curriculum.
Here are some words from the judging panel:
“Your Action Plan contains a diverse range of activities to create positive behaviours, make an immediate difference to your local environment, and expand your Eco-Schools’ initiatives into your local community…We particularly enjoyed seeing the pupils’ work – the beautifully presented and informative poster on ‘rainforest life’; the enquiry-based lesson on renewable and non-renewable energy; and the amazing identification key on leaves.
You have created passionate young environmentalists who are excited about protecting our planet and empowered to make a difference. Ultimately this is the number one goal of the Eco-Schools programme.”
Our Eco Padlet showcases all of the work done over the last 12 months.
